Structure and Functions

Normally the Nagios-system management is installed in the existing IT-infrastructure on a seperate server or as guest in a virtual environment. There the requirements concerning the ressources are dependent on the numbers of monitored computer systems and on the performed service-checks. A request of more than 200 systems and 1200 service-checks on one computer system with a storage of 1GB is no problem.

The installation of Nagios is provided by Nagios.org as a software package. The software package is independent of distribution and can be implanted on every  Linux/Unix-derivative.

After the basic installation the plug-ins that are required to monitor  system components are installed. Monitored core components are CPU, system  load, file systems and network adapter. Also the state of system services and temprature is monitored. Configured ressources can be summarized in groups and can be refered to different area of accountability for notifications or administration. Ressources are monitored periodically with the help of plug-ins. Depending on priority time periods for monitoring can be scheduled.

Already available system management software that have an integrated standardised communication interface can be integrated. For example „SNMP-Traps“ from Nagios can be accepted and processed. The general survey of the current state of the monitored ressourceis given by the Tactical Overview - the start page of Nagios.
