Fault Tolerant Systems

Fault tolerant systems guarantee the highest level of hardware availability. Every component of a fault tolerant system has one or more of the same components. There isn't one single point of failure.

A special management unit watches over the components, and makes decisions based on whether a component has failed. The management unit is able to disable the failed component, and enable a backup component, based on a powerful bug tracing algorithm.

The end result of these actions is having an uninterrupted IT system for a long time. This time frame can be some years or more.

A fault tolerant system is usually based on a expensive hardware budget. Fault tolerant systems don't include protection on application level, or against logical failure. They are just another part of the overall HA concept.
