Cluster

The term cluster implies the merging of two or more nodes into one logical system. This `group` of systems offers one or more applications or services to an envoironment. Typicaly, the cluster end-user isn't able to detect which single system offers the service.

Different kinds of cluster are able to increase the availability of business critical processes, to split tasks with high demand of computing power to several nodes or to distribute requests to nodes with equal function to increase the total performance.

A crash of a single system will not result in the loss of the overall system; this is a feature of all clusters. But a decrease in the total performance could be possible.

The cluster nodes may be assigned to service different roles. Clusters are able to provide more then one service. For futher sections we will focus on active cluster systems.
