The logical volume manager - LVM - is an abstraction layer that brings storage device handling on Linux to the enterprise level. With LVM you can put physical disk devices (PV's) into a pool that is called volume group (VG). Now you can assign storage capacity (LV's) from this pool of storage (VG) to applications, independent of the physical layout of disks. The administrator can also extend and resize these logical volumes online. It is also possible to move the whole pool of storage online, while users can still access the data. This is useful for storage migration or if you want to replace a disk before it actually dies. LifeKeeper can integrate and manage logical volumes with the LVM ARK and if you use LVM within your LifeKeeper cluster, the LVM ARK is required.
